Where does the expression 'blue Monday' come from, there are several theories, we like this one.
De 'wol-verfhypothese'.
Om wol blauw te verven, werd deze eerst in een gele kleurstof geweekt. Vervolgens ging de wol in een bad met (menselijke) urine om de verf kleurecht te maken. Zo hechtte de verfstof zich goed aan de wol, die daarna te drogen werd gehangen. Tijdens het drogen kwam de gele kleurstof in aanraking met zuurstof uit de lucht, waardoor de kleur veranderde in indigo, een blauwe kleur die niet meer uit de wol gewassen kon worden. De wol werd traditiegetrouw op zaterdag in de week gezet en op maandagochtend opgehangen om te drogen en blauw te worden. Op een blauwe maandag konden de wolververs dus niet werken.
The "wool paint hypothesis.
To dye wool blue it was first soaked in a yellow dye. Subsequently, the wool went in a bath with (human) urine to colorfast the paint. Thus, the dye attached well to the wool, which then was hung out to dry. During drying, the yellow dye came into contact with oxygen from the air, causing the color change into an indigo blue color that could not be washed from the wool. The wool was traditionally set to soak on Saturday and on Monday morning hung to dry and become blue. In a blue monday, the dyers could not work.
